Machinability of titanium alloys; Titanium alloys 101

    Machinability of titanium alloys

Machinability of titanium alloys a little bad. as a CNC machining factory, we have done various Titanium alloys prototype. as you know; Titanium alloy not only has the advantages of light mass, but also have high specific strength and good corrosion resistance; in brief that is why it is widely used in the automotive industry.

    what is titanium alloys

    Alloy metals made from titanium and other metals;

    Titanium alloys mechanical properties

Titanium alloy has high strength, good corrosion resistance, high heat resistance, good low temperature performance, and high chemical activity.

    High strength

in fact the density of titanium alloy is around 4.5g/cm3; and the strength of pure titanium is close to ordinary steel; some high-strength titanium alloy exceeds the strength of many alloy structural steel; moreover; the strength of titanium alloy is much greater than other metal materials; can be made unit strength; good toughness; light weight parts; parts in the aircraft engine structure, skeleton, skin, fasteners and landing gear are used. Titanium alloys are used in aircraft engine structure, skeleton, skin, fasteners and landing gear, etc.

    High thermal strength

As i said; The use temperature is several hundred degrees; obviously higher than aluminum alloy; The working temperature of titanium alloy can reach 500°C;  on the other hand aluminum alloy is below 200°C.

    Good resistance to corrosion

Titanium alloy can work in the humid atmosphere and seawater; furthermore corrosion resistance is far better than stainless steel; acid corrosion; stress corrosion resistance is particularly strong; to alkali; chloride; chlorine organic substances, nitric acid, sulfuric acid, etc. have excellent corrosion resistance.

    Great Work in Low temperature

Titanium alloy in low and ultra-low temperature; so it can maintain its mechanical properties; low temperature performance is good,

    hardness

Titanium alloy hardness is actually not very high; after Machining the hardness will be around 250 ~ 350 HV; after Heat treatment; the hardness will be increase higher.

    Applications

Titanium alloy is mainly used to make aircraft engine compressor parts; followed by structural parts for rockets; missiles and high-speed aircraft.

    Conclusion

titanium alloy Machining performance is poor; difficult to process; obviously more bad then aluminium die casting;  in addition the price is relatively high; This is one of its disadvantages.
